Winners and Losers from the 2023 F1 Spanish Grand Prix

Image
Whereas a couple of races ago, there were questions as to whether there would be a Formula 1 title fight in 2023, that notion has now been firmly shut in crushing style by Max Verstappen. A 14-point lead after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has now turned into 53 in just three races after the World Champion delivered three wins on the trot and, for the first time this season, a Grand Chelem. Verstappen will be the 2023 World Champion, and match Juan Manuel Fangio, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton as the only drivers to win three titles on the trot - and with Red Bull's advantage seemingly going to be locked in until the end of 2025, it would take a brave person not to declare the Dutchman as favourite for '24 and '25 before the rules reset comes in. But at least there are finally signs that Mercedes might be getting their act together, and the prospect of Verstappen vs Lewis Hamilton in 2024 should be quite something if what has gone before tell...

The 'common theme' shared by Verstappen, Alonso and Vettel

Image
Aston Martin Technical Director Dan Fallows has identified a "key" ability shared by some of the most successful Formula 1 drivers he has worked with, such as Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. Prior to joining Aston Martin , Fallows worked at Red Bull and was a part of the squad during their championship-winning period of dominance between 2010 and 2013. Over the years the Briton has worked with a host of well-known names in the sport, and believes that there is a particular skill that sets apart the particularly talented drivers. Fallows on skill of greatest F1 drivers When asked what similarities the likes of World Champions Verstappen, Alonso and Vettel share on the Beyond The Grid podcast, Fallows explained: "They have that ability to add that extra couple of tenths to the performance of the car. "I don't really know where that comes from, that's a sort of raw talent. But the one thing that they all certainly h...

Russell opens up on 'eye-opening' moment in first season with Mercedes

Image
George Russell has opened up about the "eye-opening" sense of overwhelm he felt at winning his first F1 race in 2022. The season was a difficult one for Mercedes , with the squad facing issues on their W13 car that saw them struggle to match the pace of their rivals. Despite this, a high point came at the penultimate race weekend of the year in Brazil, where Russell claimed victory in the Sprint before going on to clinch his debut Formula 1 race win. The range of emotions that followed came as something of a surprise to the Briton. Russell on 'overwhelming' emotions of winning "One of the most mentally fatiguing moments of my year last year was actually when I won the race in Brazil," Russell told Square Mile . "Because there were so many emotions that I went through during the race, so many emotions after the race, so much attention from the media and the cameras, so much love and support from friends and families and social m...

Alpine exclusive: 'Massive advantage' in not having Red Bull as customer

Image
Alpine technical director Matt Harman says not having to supply "distraction" Red Bull Formula 1 power units is a "massive advantage ". The long time relationship between Red Bull and Renault fractured in the turbo hybrid era owing to the French manufacturer's struggle to get on par with Mercedes and Ferrari units, meaning Red Bull were left fighting for occasional wins. In mid-2018, it was announced that the partnership would cease, with Red Bull switching over to Honda power from '19 onwards, leaving Renault as a supplier to McLaren as well as their own works squad, now badged as Alpine. McLaren elected to return to Mercedes units for 2021, meaning Renault are the only team not to have any customer supply deals with only the Enstone-based outfit running their offering. However, Harman believes this has rewards for the team throughout the process, from design, building and racing. ...
