Mortal Kombat Fans Still Think The 1995 Film Is The Best

As a video Game series that borrows heavily from martial arts films, Mortal Kombat movies are a no-brainer. And yet few have managed to achieve widespread acclaim with fans and critics, as many feel that these adaptations just don't stick the landing. Well, unless it's the original 1995 film, of course.

Of the six films the Games have received, across both live-action and animation, most fans are still citing Mortal Kombat (1995) as their favourite. This is despite the 2021 reboot working with a much larger budget, and seemingly trying to replace the old film as the definitive Mortal Kombat movie.

This comes from a passionate discussion on the Mortal Kombat subreddit, with fans putting forward their pick for the best Mortal Kombat movie. For a whole lot of them, this isn't a difficult decision.

"There still hasn't been a better one than the first one," says Reddit user Jataaka. Many agree, saying that there is only one clear acceptable answer.

"The first one is the best. It knew how absurd and cheesy the premise was and ran with it," says Jig_2000. "Accurate and respectful to the Games as well. I'd argue it's the best video Game movie and second best video Game adaptation."

There are a few brave souls willing to say they prefer the 2021 reboot, but for the most part, fans blast its depictions of the characters. They are especially unhappy with how the film retconned everyone's abilities too, introducing the concept of "Arcana" to explain why magic exists in the universe.

Aside from that, the rest of the movies are fighting for second place. This spot is typically taken up by one of the animated Mortal Kombat Legends films, which definitely seems less divisive than the live-action offerings. That leaves us with Annihilation, with the consensus being that it's firmly in the "so bad it's good" category.

And hey, in case anyone's wondering what the correct ranking is, here's my list.

  1. Mortal Kombat (1995)
  2. Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind
  3. Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms
  4. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge
  5. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
  6. Mortal Kombat (2021)

Alright, let's all at least bond over the fact that we can agree on the top pick.
